Mangroves and their importance:

Mangroves are tropical and subtropical intertidal forest ecosystems that can withstand saline habitats. Mangroves rely on tidal and terrestrial waters for nourishment, as well as slit deposits left behind by upland erosion for substrate support. The swamp is enriched by mineral-rich sediments carried by rivers from various places it passes through, while the tides nourish the forest. As a result, both marine and terrestrial influences shape and nourish mangroves.

It is a most prolific ecosystem which naturally occurs and produces renewable resources. The world’s mangroves are under attack from all directions due to habitat destruction, pollution, etc.

For many developing nations, the loss of mangroves poses a significant environmental and financial threat. Simultaneously, their main output sustains near-shore and estuarine fisheries and a variety of wildlife and avifauna. As a result, villages will suffer significantly from the ongoing deterioration and depletion of this essential resource, which will also negatively impact wildlife habitats, terrestrial and aquatic production, and—above all—the environmental stability of coastal forests, which protect inland agricultural crops.

The mangrove cover in India is 4,872 square meters, or 0.15% of the country’s total land area, according to the forest survey report. Major deltaic regions of India, including the Gangetic, Sunderbans, Mahanadhi, Krishna, Cauvery, and Andaman and Nicobar group of islands, are home to this type of forest.

Pondicherry Mangroves Species:

Pondicherry (Pondy) has ten species of Mangroves recorded. (Avicennia marina and Clerodendrum inerme species are the most common in the Pondicherry Region. Acanthaceae species are other varieties which are common in Pondicherry. You will see these varieties along the Gingee River during your Mangrove boating.
