Sacred heart church, also called “ Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus”, is opposite the Pondicherry railway station next to white town. It was built based on the Gothic Revival Architecture movement that started in the late 1840s in England.
Sacred Heart Church History
Sacred heart church construction was started in 1902 and completed in Dec 1907. The Sacred Heart Church plan was prepared by the Parish Priest of Nellithope and executed by Cathedral Rev. Fr. Fourcaud. Mgr. Gandhi held the first holy mass of the church on 17-12-1907.
Structure
From the aerial view, like all the churches, “Sacred heart church” was designed in a cross shape 50 meters long, 48 meters wide and 18 meters height, where Jesus will be positioned in the centre of the cross. Twenty parish priests to date led sacred heart church. Parish priest Thomas renovated this church in 2005. Church has a rare painted glass window, which tells the stories of the life of Christ and the saints of the Catholic Church.
Centenary celebrations:
Sacred heart church celebrated its centenary year of founding in 2008-09. Unique postal stamps and postal envelopes were released to commemorate the centenary year.
