Have you ever imagined sailing in the Bay of Bengal in Pondicherry?
Pondy Yacht Club (PYC) will make your dream come true. Sailing is one of the best water sports, not harming Mother Earth. There might be nothing in the world that packs as many life lessons as the activity of sailing. It teaches teamwork, engineering, history, patience, oceanography, and ecology all in one fell swoop.
History of Pondy Yacht Club
Pondy Yacht Club was started by Aurofilio and Anjali in 2022. They got their first sailboat made in Mumbai called “Kai”, which means ocean in Hawaiian.
The 21ft long sailboat is a seabird class boat and is available to give guests a unique sailing experience in Pondicherry, along the east coast of India.
Pondy Yacht Club is located in the Thengaithittu estuary, looking at the mangroves about 4km from the heritage town and 5 km from Rock Beach.
Aurofilio co-founded the Pondicherry Sailing Association (PSA), now called “Coromandel Yachting Club”, which was founded in 2011 to promote sailing in Pondicherry. The association has been affiliated with the Yachting Association of India (YAI)

Booking.comHow to Reach
Pondy Yacht Club is located in Thengaittu, close to the white town, just 4 km from Rock Beach.
If you are travelling from the heritage town, you need to cross the Indira Gandhi sports complex and then take a right at the harbour road, which is close to the walls of the Expo ground.
This is the best route if you are travelling with a four-wheeler. There is one more route via Marapalam, where you need to take thengaithittu main road, which is narrow. Four-wheelers will struggle to go through the narrow road
Pondicherry Yacht Club is committed to protecting the environment. They conduct classes on Mangrove conservation. I have taken classes on ” Birds of Thengaittu Estuary” during the “Pondicherry Heritage Festival. The audience was excited to learn about local biodiversity and the need to conserve them.

At PSA, they also offer Stand up paddling in the backwaters covered with mangroves. We did stand up paddling for an hour exploring the mangroves. Really a nice place also to watch birds and the local fishermen both catch some fish. The couple who run the place are super friendly, professional and very passionate about sailing. I will definitely give sailing a try next time. A nice activity to try when visiting Pondy.
We have attended lagoon sailing there. These guys are the best. If someone is planning for a pondy trip I suggest you to go for sailing⛵. You’ll enjoy and at the same time they’ll explain you how to sail. I’m sure you’ll love it guys. It’ll be memorable 😊
Note to all the Sparrows/Lufis: Don’t try to steal their boat after you learn how to sail😉
We went for a sea sailing with them. It was my husband’s birthday and i wanted to surprise him. He loved it and it happened to be one of his best experiences. Anjali, her husband and her team explained us how sea sailing works and even arranged a complimentary cake. and it is one of life time experience I would say and i am happy we get to experience this in Pondy.
Had a fantastic day on the ocean with Filio and Laxman, fabulous company and guides for our experience. Made to feel very welcome and relaxed during our sailing trip.. highly recommended to anyone wishing to enjoy the serenity of the Bay of Bengal. Many thanks Jon
I went for sea sail and open sea swimming, and had a wonderful experience with Filio and Rajesh. It was my first time sailing but Filio and team had all my inhibitions cleared and ensured to make those couple of hours very memorable. I highly recommend sailing with them.. Will be back again 👍
