When you think of boating in Pondicherry, the Chunnambar boat usually comes to mind. But there is another boating option in Pondicherry where you can do boating in mangroves. To enjoy boating in the mangrove forest, you don’t need to go to Pichavaram or Muthupettai; Pondicherry mangroves offer this unique experience. This is one of the hidden gems of Pondicherry, located just a few kilometres from the White town.

You can go Mangrove boating in Pondy Marina, which is close to White Town, or Visit the Arts and Crafts village.
Entry Fee/Ticket Price: There are no entry fees for Arts and Crafts Village. Entry is free.
Local Artisans crafts
Arts and Crafts Village exhibits the works of local artisans who were residents of Pondicherry over the years. Going around the town, you can find many handicraft shops with unique handicrafts made by local artisans. Shops like Woodcrafts – which makes wooden toys and other interesting hand-made wooden materials, Marble Stone Shop has displayed works from marble stones with agarbatti stands, candle stands, and soapboxes made up of marble stones, which are time-consuming artworks on their own.
There is also a Decorative candles shop, pottery studio, Jute bag shop, and other unique artefact shops that excite you. Not much of a crowd will be there since this place is still unknown to many. You can have a peaceful time here.
Wildlife sculptures
On the right side of the Arts and Crafts village entrance, you can see a wildlife sculpture-making organization working on wildlife awareness campaigns by making real-life animal sculptures. Boating in the mangroves is one of the main attractions at the Arts and Crafts village. The backwaters of the Ariyankuppam River flow alongside the Arts and Crafts Village and in Pondy Marina, where boating activities occur. This is the first time in Pondicherry that boating happens in the mangrove’s habitats. People must go to Pichavaram or Muthupettai to experience boating in the mangroves.
You can also do activities like Kayaking in Mangroves, Sailing in Mangroves or Stand-up paddling.
Mangrove Trail:
There is a mangrove trail made with wooden pathways. Walking inside a mangrove forest is the best way to manoeuvre, giving a unique experience.
Thengaithittu Estuary and Aricamedu
Apart from enjoying the mangroves, you can also enjoy boating in the thengaithittu estuary, where the sea meets the river. You can also visit the historical place “ Arikamedu” while you are boating. You can spend a quality amount of time at Arikamedu and learn more about the history of Pondicherry.
